Do people constantly complain that your snoring is disrupting their
sleep? Snoring may seem harmless but when your partner has to share the
same room or the same bed every night whilst you snore, it can become a
major problem in your relationship. You’d be surprised to know that not
all snorers are middle aged men as we’d like to picture. You could be in
your prime 20′s and can yet be snoring all through the night. It makes
one wonder, why exactly does one snore while they sleep? Read on to know
all about snoring and its causes. Just like the way our vocal cords
vibrate to produce the sound of our voice, the same way the snoring
sound is produced when there is a vibration of the respiratory
structures of the upper airway when you inhale while sleeping. This
happens in particular when air cannot move freely through the nose and
mouth while you sleep. There are several reasons for this. Nasal or sinus allergy:
Many people snore only when they have cold or sinus or some sort of a
nasal infection. Such infections cause a blockage in the airways making
inhalation difficult and creating a vacuum in the throat which leads to
snoring. Your built: People with a narrow throat,
enlarged adenoids, a cleft palate and other such physical traits snore
more often. Men tend to have narrower air passage than women and this is
why they tend to snore more. Age: As you get older
your throat get narrower and the muscle tone in your throat also
decreases. This is why middle aged people snore more often than younger
folks. Being overweight: Overweight people have bulky throat tissues that influence snoring. Alcohol and smoking:
Alcohol and smoking relaxes the throat muscle and reduces your natural
defences against airway obstruction which then leads to snoring.
